Battery Alexander Wedding & Couples Photos: A Guide to One of Marin Headlands’ Most Beautiful Coastal Locations

Planning bridal portraits, wedding photos, or a couples session in the San Francisco Bay Area? Here’s why Battery Alexander in the Marin Headlands is such a beautiful place to capture your story — and what to know before your session.

There is something special about the Marin Headlands. The dramatic coastline, rolling green hills, ocean breeze, and rugged landscape make it one of my favorite kinds of settings for romantic, natural photographs. And tucked into this beautiful stretch of Northern California coastline is Battery Alexander, a location that feels a little wild, a little adventurous, and incredibly timeless.

Whether you’re planning bridal portraits after your wedding, celebrating an anniversary, taking engagement photos, or simply wanting beautiful photographs together, Battery Alexander offers a gorgeous backdrop for couples who love the outdoors and want something a little different from traditional portraits.

If you’re dreaming of photos that feel natural, romantic, and connected to the landscape, here’s why I’d recommend this location — and a few things to know before you arrive.

Why Take Wedding or Couples Photos at Battery Alexander?

1. Beautiful coastal scenery without an overly polished feel

One of my favorite things about photographing along the Marin Headlands is how much variety the landscape offers. You can have soft, grassy hills in one direction, dramatic coastal views in another, and the Pacific Ocean stretching out behind you.

Battery Alexander has that beautiful Northern California coastal atmosphere. The landscape feels organic and a little rugged, which makes it perfect for couples who want their photographs to feel effortless rather than overly posed.

I love the idea of a bride in a flowing dress with the ocean breeze moving through her veil, or a couple simply walking together along the coast. These are the kinds of moments that create photographs that feel like memories rather than just portraits.

2. A romantic setting for bridal portraits

If you didn’t have time for portraits on your wedding day, or you want to get back into your wedding attire for a more relaxed experience, a bridal session is a wonderful option.

Without a wedding-day timeline to follow, we can slow down, explore, and create photographs that give your dress, flowers, and the surrounding landscape room to shine.

Battery Alexander is especially beautiful for couples who love a natural, editorial look — think movement, soft coastal light, wind in your hair, and photographs that feel both elegant and adventurous.

You don’t need a big production or elaborate poses. Sometimes the most beautiful photographs come from walking hand in hand, leaning into each other, or taking a quiet moment together while the waves crash in the distance.

3. Variety in one location

Another reason I love the Marin Headlands is the variety of scenery within a relatively small area. Depending on the route and conditions, we can incorporate coastal trails, grassy hills, historic battery surroundings, and ocean views into your session.

The nearby Batteries Loop Trail provides views of the Pacific and Rodeo Beach, giving us a beautiful coastal setting to explore.

This variety is especially helpful for bridal portraits because it allows us to create a gallery that feels diverse without needing to drive between multiple locations.

4. Beautiful photographs in almost any season

Northern California’s coastal weather gives the Marin Headlands a different look throughout the year. Spring can bring greener hills and seasonal wildflowers, while summer often brings that dreamy coastal fog. Fall and winter can offer dramatic skies and a moodier ocean backdrop.

There isn’t one perfect look for every couple. I love choosing the timing and overall feel of a session around the kind of photographs you’re drawn to.

One thing to remember: even on a sunny day in the Bay Area, the coast can become windy, foggy, and chilly quickly. That’s part of the beauty of this landscape, but it’s worth planning for!

What to Know Before Your Battery Alexander Photo Session

Battery Alexander is a beautiful outdoor location, but it isn’t a traditional beach where you can simply step out of the car and begin taking photos in the sand. A little preparation makes the experience much more enjoyable, especially if you’re wearing a wedding dress.

Wear comfortable shoes for walking

This is probably my biggest recommendation!

If you’re bringing heels or dress shoes for your photographs, bring a second pair of comfortable shoes for walking between locations. Depending on where we photograph, the terrain may include uneven ground, gravel, natural trails, and areas of ice plant.

Ice plant can be slippery or unstable underfoot, especially on sloped ground. I recommend walking carefully, wearing shoes with good traction, and staying on established trails rather than stepping onto fragile vegetation or steep coastal edges.

You can always change into your wedding shoes once we’ve reached a spot where you’re comfortable standing and posing.

My tip: Keep your beautiful shoes clean and ready for the photographs, and let your walking shoes do the hard work in between!

Plan extra time if you want beach photos

If you’d love to include photographs down by the water, we’ll want to allow extra time for getting to and from the beach.

Walking down to the beach, navigating the terrain, and returning to the starting point can take longer than expected — particularly in a long wedding dress or formal shoes. The exact route and time depend on the access point and conditions that day.

I recommend discussing your preferred locations ahead of time so we can build enough time into your session rather than rushing through the experience.

And remember, you don’t have to make it all the way down to the sand to get beautiful coastal photographs. The views from the surrounding landscape can be just as stunning!

Consider taking your shoes off for beach photographs

If you want those barefoot, romantic photographs at the water’s edge, I absolutely recommend considering a quick shoe change once we’re on the beach.

Bare feet can look beautiful with a flowing wedding dress, and it can be much easier than trying to walk through sand in heels. You can carry your shoes, hold them in your hands for a few photographs, or leave them safely out of the way while we capture a few barefoot moments.

Just be mindful that the water can be cold, the sand may be uneven, and small rocks or debris can be uncomfortable underfoot. We’ll choose a suitable spot based on the conditions.

If you’d rather keep your shoes on, that’s completely fine, too! We’ll work with what feels comfortable for you.

Bring a warm layer between photographs

Even if the forecast looks warm, the coastal breeze can feel surprisingly chilly once you’re standing still in a wedding dress.

I recommend bringing a jacket, coat, or warm layer that you can put on between photographs. A blanket can also be helpful if we’re taking breaks or waiting for the light.

You don’t need to sacrifice the look of your photographs to stay comfortable. We’ll simply take the layer off when we’re ready to shoot.

Prepare for wind — and embrace it!

The wind is part of what makes coastal portraits so beautiful. It can create movement in your veil, add texture to your dress, and give your photographs that effortless, windswept feeling.

For bridal sessions, consider bringing a veil if you love the look of one. A simple veil can photograph beautifully against the ocean and open landscape.

For hair, a style that can withstand a little movement is helpful. You might also want a few bobby pins, a brush, and lip color for quick touch-ups.

Rather than expecting every strand of hair to stay perfectly in place, I love leaning into the natural movement of the coast. It can make your photographs feel even more alive.

Keep your outfit and accessories practical

For bridal portraits, bring your dress, veil, bouquet, and any accessories you’d like included. If you’re wearing a long train, be prepared for the possibility of a little dust, sand, or contact with the ground.

For couples sessions, neutral and earthy tones, soft textures, and outfits that move naturally in the breeze tend to complement this landscape beautifully. You don’t need matching outfits — choose pieces that coordinate without looking too identical.

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you.

The Best Time for Photos at Battery Alexander

The best timing depends on the light, weather, season, and the specific look you want for your photographs.

I love planning outdoor sessions around softer light when possible, because it can create beautiful skin tones and a romantic atmosphere. The coast can also be gorgeous on foggy or overcast days, when the light feels soft and the scenery takes on a more muted, cinematic look.

Keep in mind that sunset doesn’t always mean a clear view of the sun along the Marin Headlands. Fog and cloud cover can change the light quickly, so flexibility is helpful.

If you’re planning a bridal session, I recommend allowing enough time to explore and photograph without feeling rushed. We’ll choose a start time based on the season and forecast.

What to Bring to Your Session

Here’s a quick checklist to make your Battery Alexander session easier.

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good traction

  • Wedding shoes or dress shoes for the photographs

  • A warm jacket or layer for between shots

  • Water

  • A veil, bouquet, or other bridal accessories, if desired

  • Hair and makeup touch-up essentials

  • A small bag for carrying personal items

  • Extra time in your schedule if you’d like to visit the beach

Before your session, it’s also a good idea to check current park alerts and trail conditions. The Marin Headlands is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and access or conditions can change.
