From Sun to Fog at Montara State BEach, Half Moon Bay

Embracing the Unexpected: What to Know About Coastal Photo Sessions in Half Moon Bay and San Francisco

Earlier this week, I had the honor of photographing a wonderful family visiting from India at Montara State Beach in Half Moon Bay. We had scheduled their session on a day forecasted to be full of sunshine—a perfect backdrop for the joyful and natural images they were hoping for. But as I made my way to the beach, the forecasted sunshine slowly faded. A soft layer of clouds rolled in, eventually giving way to a thick and dreamy coastal fog.

Though it wasn’t the golden light we had envisioned, what unfolded was something truly magical. The fog wrapped the session in a quiet calm, softening the surroundings and creating a timeless, ethereal feel that you simply can’t plan for—but can absolutely fall in love with.

This experience reminded me of something I often share with clients: when it comes to the coast, the beauty is in the unpredictability.

The Unique Weather Along the California Coast

The coastline of the San Francisco Bay Area—especially in places like Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, and San Francisco—is known for its microclimates. A sunny forecast inland can still turn into overcast skies or fog along the water. “Carl the Fog,” as locals call it, has a personality all its own and can appear at a moment’s notice, especially during late spring and summer months.

While some may initially feel disappointed by the lack of sunshine, there’s something incredibly special about foggy sessions. The light becomes soft and even, skin tones are beautifully balanced, and distractions in the background melt away—placing the focus entirely on you and your connection.

My Weather Policy & Professional Approach

While I do my best to schedule sessions based on ideal conditions, the weather is ultimately out of our control. That’s why I believe in setting clear expectations:

  • Fog or Overcast Skies: We proceed with the session. These conditions often result in beautifully lit, evenly toned images that many clients end up loving even more than sunny ones.

  • Rain: Sessions are rescheduled or canceled depending on availability and location.

  • Extreme Wind or Humidity: May be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Reshoots Due to Weather: Unfortunately, I am not able to offer complimentary reshoots due to fog or cloud cover. Rescheduling is possible as a new booking with an additional fee.

I always aim to be transparent, so clients know what to expect—and so we can focus on making the most of the moment we have.

How to Prepare for Coastal Sessions

To help ensure a comfortable and successful session, especially along the coast, here are a few tips:

  • Dress in layers: Even in summer, the coast can be cool and breezy.

  • Bring a cozy blanket or jacket: Particularly helpful for little ones or during foggy moments.

  • Trust the location suggestions I provide: Inland or protected spots may offer more consistent conditions, if that’s a priority.

  • Come with an open mind: Some of the most magical sessions come from letting go of the plan and embracing the experience.

A Final Thought

When we step into nature, we step into something bigger than ourselves. Weather can shift, light can surprise us, and conditions can unfold in ways we didn’t expect. But that’s also where the real beauty lies. The fog at Montara wasn’t what we planned for—but it gave us softness, stillness, and a session filled with connection and grace.

Whether it’s sun-kissed or mist-wrapped, every session has the potential to be beautiful in its own way. And I’m always honored to capture that beauty—whatever form it takes.

If you’re considering a photo session along the coast, I’d love to help guide you to the right location, the right time, and the right expectations—so we can create something truly special together.
